At Holly Tree Childrens Nursery we value education, learning and development no matter what age your child is. From babies in baby day care, to children in pre-school care, every age group has their own needs to be met to allow for great development.
Babies from the start develop at a very quick pace indeed, from the moment they are born the brain is absorbing stimuli from everywhere. They are naturally pre-programmed to soak up as many experiences as possible. The more they consume the quicker they develop, the right stimuli at the right level is essential to ensure this appetite for development is nourished in the best way possible.
Vision is still developing after birth.
In the womb babies can tell the difference between light and dark, which means at birth eyesight is still developing. In the early days a baby can see best when an object is around 15-20cm away from them. When we feed or cuddle a baby our faces are at around this same optimal distance away from the baby. Scientist have suggested this is an evolutionary trait to help babies feel safe with their care giver whilst limiting other input from the outside world.
Wide agreement from the scientific community also indicates that babies colour perception is limited at birth. A baby first detects only white, black and shades of grey, evidence suggests that red is the next colour to be picked up by young eyes, with the rest of the rainbow following closely afterwards.
Helping your child to develop their vision is easy, cuddles are great, spending time looking at each others faces is a superb and bonding experience alongside great stimulation for vision. Quite quickly your baby will start to follow your movements and even copy some of your simpler gestures.
High contrast books for babies are a great choice
Many people agree babies are never too young to enjoy a book. Bold high contrast images preferably in black and white with simple lines and shapes are a great way to introduce your baby to books. As you turn the pages take time to tell your baby what the pictures are, perhaps even take their hand to touch and trace the shapes. All this adds ups to helping your baby gain greater control of vision, enjoy more interaction and of course give them a head start in life with all aspects of development.
Here are just a few high contrast books for baby available from Amazon that feature high contrast images.
